Mother's Day

The majority of countries that celebrate Mother’s Day do so on the second Sunday of May. On this day, it is common for Mothers to be lavished with presents and special attention from their families, friends and loved ones.

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Mother's Day. In ancient times, societies tended to celebrate Goddesses and a Mother deity with some of the earliest records found among the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans.

The more recent history of Mothers Day dates back to the 1600s in England.  Early Christians marked the day by honouring the church in which they were baptized.  The respective church, known as the “Mother Church”, was decorated with jewels, flowers and other fanciful offerings to mark the special day. This tradition became known as “Mothering”.   On this day, servants and trade workers were allowed to travel back to their towns of origin to visit their families.  Across England, families enjoyed a lavish feast together, with the mother of the house as the guest of honour. Mothers were presented with cakes and flowers, as well as a visit from their treasured and distant children.

Today Mothers Day is celebrated in approximately 46 countries around the world.
